US tax deadlines for filers abroad.

Every key US tax date that matters when you live outside the US — and what each deadline actually does.

  1. January 15

    Q4 estimated tax payment

Final estimated payment for the prior tax year for those making quarterly payments.

  2. April 15

    Main filing & payment deadline

Filing deadline for US residents — and the payment deadline for everyone, including Americans abroad. Interest runs from this date even if you file later on an extension.

  3. April 15

    FBAR (FinCEN 114) due

Foreign bank account report due — with an automatic extension to October 15. No separate request needed.

  4. June 15

    Automatic extension for Americans abroad

US citizens and residents living outside the US get an automatic two-month filing extension. Payment was still due April 15.

  5. October 15

    Extended filing deadline

Deadline if you filed Form 4868 for the automatic six-month extension. Also the extended FBAR deadline.

  6. December 15

    Discretionary further extension

Americans abroad can request a further two-month discretionary extension by letter to the IRS.

Never miss a deadline again.
